In 1979, Lechleiter, then a grad student at Harvard, was trying to decide between a career in industry or academia when Eli Lilly came to campus on a recruiting effort. They offered him a job and he accepted. "I liked the company and had roots in the Midwest," he recalls. The 26-year-old would go on to spend his entire career with Lilly, assuming a variety of drug development and commercial roles before being named president and CEO in 2008. Lechleiter's current mission is to rebuild Lilly's pipeline in time to replace the revenue loss from patent expirations scheduled for 2010 and beyond. A "fairly rabid" New York Yankees fan, Lechleiter walks to work, plays golf and enjoys relaxing on the family farm.
