Alan R. Mulally
President and CEO,
Ford Motor Company
Last Updated: 07/29/2010

Biographical Summary

Beginning his career as an engineer at Boeing, Mulally rose through the ranks to become CEO in 2002 before leaving Boeing to become president and CEO of Ford Motor Company in 2006. Mulally is now leading the century-plus-old automaker through one of its toughest periods and re-aligning its focus from trucks and SUVs to smaller cars, hybrids and more fuel-efficient engines. The company is also one of the early industry adopters when it comes to social media and is taking a page out of the Apple playbook by enabling its autos to run apps and encouraging developers to create innovative applications for use in cars. His strategy appears to be working: Ford has been regaining market share after years of decline and in 2010 outsold General Motors for the first time in more than 80 years. If he continues to succeed, Mulally will be credited with one of the great turnarounds in corporate history.
